Physical distribution takes place within numerous wholesaling and retailing distribution channels, and includes such important decision areas as customer service, inventory control, materials handling, protective packaging, order procession, transportation, warehouse site selection, and warehousing. Physical distribution is part of a larger process called distribution, which includes wholesale and retail marketing, as well the physical movement of products. Physical distribution activities have recently received increasing attention from business managers, including small business owners. This is due in large part to the fact that these functions often represent almost half of the total marketing costs of a product. In fact, research studies indicate that physical distribution costs nationally amount to approximately 20 percent of the countrys total gross national product (GNP). These findings have led many small businesses to expand their cost-cutting efforts beyond their historical focus on production to encompass physical distribution activities. The importance of physical distribution is also based on its relevance to customer satisfaction. By storing goods in convenient locations for shipment to wholesalers and retailers, and by creating fast, reliable means of moving the goods, small business owners can help assure continued success in a rapidly changing, competitive global market. But in 1977 the deregulation of transportation began with the removal of federal regulations for cargo air carriers not engaged in passenger transportation. The deregulation movement has since expanded in ways that have fundamentally altered the transportation landscape for small business owners, large conglomerates and, ultimately, the consumer. Transportation costs are largely based on the rates charged by carriers. There are two basic types of transportation rates: class and commodity. The class rate, which is the higher of the two rates, is the standard rate for every commodity moving between any two destinations. The commodity rate is sometimes called a special rate, since it is given by carriers to shippers as a reward for either regular use or large-quantity shipments. Unfortunately, many small business owners do not have the volume of shipping needed to take advantage of commodity rates. However, small businesses are increasingly utilizing a third type of rate that has emerged in recent years. This rate is known as a negotiated or contract rate. Popularized in the 1980s following transportation deregulation, contract rates allow a shipper and carrier to negotiate a rate for a particular service, with the terms of the rate, service, and other variables finalized in a contract between the two parties. Transportation cos ts vary by mode of shipping, as discussed below. TRUCKINGLEXIBLE AND GROWING The shipping method most favored by small business (and many large enterprises as well) is trucking. Carrying primarily manufactured products (as opposed to bulk materials), trucks offer fast, frequent, and economic delivery to more destinations in the country than any other mode. Trucks are particularly useful for short-distance shipments, and they offer relatively fast, consistent service for both large and small shipments. AIR FREIGHTAST BUT EXPENSIVE Because of the relatively high cost of air transport, small businesses typically use air only for the movement of valuable or highly-perishable products. However, goods that qualify for this treatment do represent a significant share of the small business market. Owners can sometimes offset the high cost of air transportation with reduced inventory-holding costs and the increased business that may accompany faster customer service. WATER CARRIERSLOW BUT INEXPENSIVE There are two basic types of water carriers: inland or barge lines, and oceangoing deep-water ships. Barge lines are efficient transporters of bulky, low-unit-value commodities such as grain, gravel, lumber, sand, and steel. Barge lines typically do not serve small businesses. Oceangoing ships, on the other hand, operate in the Great Lakes, transporting goods among port cities, and in international commerce. Sea shipments are an important part of foreign trade, and thus are of vital importance to small businesses seeking an international market share. RAILROADSONG DISTANCE SHIPPING Railroads continue to present an efficient mode for the movement of bulky commodities over long distances. These commodities include coal, chemicals, grain, non-metallic minerals, and lumber and wood products. PIPELINESPECIALIZED TRANSPORTERS Pipelines are utilized to efficiently transport natural gas and oil products from mining sites to refineries and other destinations. In addition, so-called slurry pipelines transport products such as coal, which is ground to a powder, mixed with water, and moved as a suspension through the pipes. INTERMODAL SERVICES Small business owners often take advantage of multi-mode deals offered by shipping companies. Under these arrangements, business owners can utilize a given transportation mode in the section of the trip in which it is most cost efficient, and use other modes for other segments of the transport. Overall costs are often significantly lower under this arrangement than with single-mode transport. Of vital importance to small businesses are transporters specializing in small shipments. These include bus freight services, United Parcel Service, Federal Express, DHL International, the United States Postal Service, and others. Since small businesses can be virtually paralyzed by transportation strikes or other disruptions in small shipment service, many owners choose to diversify to include numerous shippers, thus maintaining an established relationship with an alternate shipper should disruptions occur. Additionally, small businesses often rely on freight forwarders who act as transportation intermediaries: these firms consolidate shipments from numerous customers to provide lower rates than are available without consolidation. Freight forwarding not only provides cost savings to small businesses, it provides entrepreneurial opportunities for start-up businesses as well. WAREHOUSING Small business owners who require warehousing facilities must decide whether to maintain their own strategically located depot(s), or resort to holding their goods in public warehouses. And those entrepreneurs who go with non-public warehousing must further decide between storage or distribution facilities. A storage warehouse holds products for moderate to long-term periods in an attempt to balance supply and demand for producers and purchasers. They are most often used by small businesses whose products supply and demand are seasonal. On the other hand, a distribution warehouse assembles and redistributes products quickly, keeping them on the move as much as possible. Many distribution warehouses physically store goods for fewer than 24 hours before shipping them on to customers. In contrast to the older, multi-story structures that dot cities around the country, modern warehouses are long, one-story buildings located in suburban and semi-rural settings where land costs are substantially less. These facilities are often located so that their users have easy access to major highways or other transportation options. Single-story construction eliminates the need for installing and maintaining freight elevators, and for accommodating floor load limits. Furthermore, the internal flow of stock runs a straight course rather than up and down multiple levels. The efficient movement of goods involves entry on one side of the building, central storage, and departure out the other end. Computer technology for automating warehouses is dropping in price, and thus is increasingly available for small business applications. Sophisticated software translates orders into bar codes and determines the most efficient inventory picking sequence. Order information is keyboarded only once, while labels, bills, and shipping documents are generated automatically. Information reaches hand-held scanners, which warehouse staff members use to fill orders. The advantages of automation include low inventory error rates and high processing speeds. INVENTORY CONTROL Inventory control can be a major component of a small business physical distribution system. Costs include funds invested in inventory, depreciation, and possible obsolescence of the goods. Experts agree that small business inventory costs have dropped dramatically due to deregulation of the transportation industry. Inventory control analysts have developed a number of techniques which can help small businesses control inventory effectively. The most basic is the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model. This involves a trade-off between the two fundamental components of an inventory control cost: inventory-carrying cost (which increases with the addition of more inventory), and order-processing cost (which decreases as the quantity ordered increases). These two cost items are traded off in determining the optimal warehouse inventory quantity to maintain for each product. The EOQ point is the one at which total cost is minimized. By maintaining product inventories as close to the EOQ point as possible, small business owners can minimize their inventory costs. ORDER PROCESSING The small business owner is concerned with order processingnother physical distribution functionecause it directly affects the ability to meet the customer service standards defined by the owner. If the order processing system is efficient, the owner can avoid the costs of premium transportation or high inventory levels. Order processing varies by industry, but often consists of four major activities: a credit check; recording of the sale, such as crediting a sales representatives commission account; making the appropriate accounting entries; and locating the item, shipping, and adjusting inventory records. Technological innovations, such as increased use of the Universal Product Code, are contributing to greater efficiency in order processing. Bar code systems give small businesses the ability to route customer orders efficiently and reduce the need for manual handling. The coded information includes all the data necessary to generate customer invoices, thus eliminating the need for repeated keypunching. Another technological innovation affecting order processing is Electronic Data Interchange. EDI allows computers at two different locations to exchange business documents in machine-readable format, employing strictly-defined industry standards. Purchase orders, invoices, remittance slips, and the like are exchanged electronically, thereby eliminating duplication of data entry, dramatic reductions in data entry errors, and increased speed in procurement cycles. One important innovation is known as unitizingombining as many packages as possible into one load, preferably on a pallet. Unitizing is accomplished with steel bands or shrink wrapping to hold the unit in place. There are products, which are impacted by the seasonality factor- either production is continuous but demand is seasonal, or demand is continuous but production is seasonal. Here too, physical distribution becomes particularly crucial. It has to perform the balancing act between production and consumption. King Lear There are really two plots in King Lear, a main plot and a fully developed subplot. Each has its own set of characters. In the main plot, there is the head of the family, the 80-plus-year-old king of Britain, Lear. He has three daughters, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. The Duke of Albany is married to the oldest, Goneril, and the Duke of Cornwall is married to Regan, the middle daughter. Cordelia has two suitors, the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France. The court jester, the Fool, is by extension a member of the Lear family and part of the main plot, as is the Earl of Kent, Lear's loyal follower. The Earl of Gloucester, also a member of Lear's court, is the head of another family and the focus of the subplot. He has two offspring, an older, legitimate son named Edgar and a younger, illegitimate or bastard son named Edmund. Various minor characters appear from time to time. They are easily identified by their connections with whatever main character they serve or speak of. As the play opens, Lear has decided to retire and divide his kingdom among his three daughters. Cordelia's husband will be chosen for her immediately after Lear executes this "living will." Before he allots the shares, Lear asks each daughter to make a profession of her love for him in order to receive her entitlement. Goneril and Regan waste no time professing love for their father, but Cordelia is speechless. She loves her father as any daughter should, no more and no less. Lear is outraged by what he sees as her lack of devotion. He cuts Cordelia out of her share and banishes her. Her share is divided between Goneril and Regan. Lear gives them everything but keeps a retinue, a following of 100 knights who will accompany him as he alternates monthly visits between his two daughters. Cordelia's suitors are called in. Without a dowry, Burgundy rejects her; but the King of France sees her true worth and leads Cordelia off to marriage and his protection. At Gloucester's castle, Edmund reveals that he will not let his illegitimate birth and older brother prevent him from inheriting his father's estate. He devises a plan to convince Gloucester that Edgar is secretly planning to kill his father to get his hands on the family property and enjoy it while he's still young. The first paragraph of the story already foreshadows of what is to come with a description of Victory Mansions, the home of Winston Smith, the protagonist of this story. It tells of the â€Å"swirl of gritty dust†¦ The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats.† Even the names of places are depressing. He lives in the province of Airstrip One, the city of London, and in the country of Oceania. The other two countries are Eastasia and Eurasia. Big Brother, a fictional or real person—no one really knows—is the leader of this miserable system of Ingsoc—English Socialism, that is. No one is allowed to hold ideas different from those of the official propaganda outlet: Minitruth. T o enforce these laws, Big Brother uses many means, the first and foremost of these being the Thought Police, a corps of law officers who monitor the populace through undercover agents, infinite amounts of surveillance cameras and hidden microphones, and a two-way television screen that can be turned down, but never off. A new language is also being introduced to retard thought: Newspeak. This new English dialect uses shortened and compacted forms of modern day words that subconsciously facilitate the assimilation of misinformation through the omission of instances such as â€Å"science†, â€Å"freedom†, and â€Å"religion.† This, obviously, is a very bleak existence, and Winston, the oddball out, realizes it. Two characters besides Winston are brought into the plot. O’Brian is an extremely famous party member who Winston suspects is really a traitor member of the underground â€Å"The Brotherhood† led by the ex-Party member Goldstein. The other is a young girl, Julia, who he hates for her commitment to an Anti-sex league, and suspects of spying on him. And so, depressed, lonely, and ever conscious of the Party’s Minitruth slogan, â€Å"Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,† he begins to search for the truth of the past, the rise to power of the current system, and, overall, the truth of his existence. The plot develops as he finds Julia is actually in love with him, and O’Brian seems to be making overtures to Winston on the subject of The Brotherhood.

Albert Bandura argues that personality is shaped not only by environmental influences on the person, but also by the person’s ability to influence the environment. Rotter. Rotter believes that the most important variables in determining personality are the person’s expectations concerning future outcomes and the values of different reinforcements that might occur in a particular situation (Atkinson et al., 2000; Smith et al., 2001).In other words, a person’s behavior depends on what he expects the outcome to any particular action to be and what those outcomes are worth. The likelihood that someone will be aggressive when trying to return a merchandise to a department store would depend then, on that person’s e xpectation about whether or not aggression will work (Atkinson et al., 2000).In Bandura’s viewpoint, human motives (Atkinson et al. 2000; Papalia, 2002).   With this premise, the theory is basically leaning toward the philosophical idea of freedom.   Man is free to chart his course and how he is supposed to fulfill his various needs; i.e. his physiological dimension. I never appreciated art before, and a part of me feels disappointed at that thought now, because I have learned to appreciate some of the emotional depth and the expression these artists showed in their work.I found myself going to the museum whenever I have time now just to walk around and look at some of the things that are there. He is still fairly young, but I fell in love with his art.There are many famous living artists today that I could have talked about, but Garibaldi really captured my attention. So, it would not surprise me if many people did not know who David Garibaldi is or know of is his artwork. To be honest, I did not know who he was either had he never appeared on America’s Got Talent in this 2012 past season. He has this mixture to his style of work which includes visual and performing art. There is this uniqueness to how he creates his work pieces, and I found it astonishing at how fast he can get a single art piece done and still be able to draw a person in instantly.Garibaldi Paintings Some people like things they can relate to, possibly understand just to keep them interested, and I thought that some of his art expresses that. In the first page of this paper, some of the images that are displayed are all from David Garibaldi. If you have not noticed, most of the pieces I have chosen to display on the cover page ties people in with music and dance. In my own opinion, I think Garibaldi expresses in most of his art pieces a sense of equality and unity among different people in gender and race.Though he does paint different portraits, he focuses on drawing people that tie in with music, for example, musicians. He has paintings of women enjoying and creating music, which to me, tells me that women should not be afraid to express themselves. Most women in today’s generation have trouble with self-esteem, so to me the paintings he has displaying women with the hair hiding the faces or, the image of a woman looking away gives the viewer a chance to let themselves think as if they were the image painted. If that were the case then that kind of style could encourage the viewer to step out of their shell.The image in the beginning of this paper the one that shows a group of people at a disco rink shows release from stress. The different styles, clothing, facial expressions show that people should go out, have fun and to just be yourself in public. I witnessed how created this piece on YouTube, and I just couldn’t believe how he painted this portrait. He created this piece extremely fast, and not to mention he painted the portrait in way that no one could make out at first until he flipped the canvas around to reveal the competition of his painting. The colors embellished in this painting gave off a series of emotions. The purple, blue, white, and green around Christ’s face and neckline resembled abuse .It told me the story of what he had to go through in order to fulfill God’s will in sacrificing himself for mankind. The black around the eye area, frown, and the tilt of the head of Christ shows sadness, or perhaps reciting a prayer since the black covering the area where the eyes would be give an appearance that his eyes are closed. Painted on top of Christ’s head was the crown of thorns with dashes of red to symbolize the blood, sweat and tears he shed for humanity. The image of the crown in the portrait displays a selfless act, one in which Christ had no qualms in wearing since he knew it was for the benefit of others.This portrait is a magnificent piece of art, because I honestly think that by the position Garibaldi painted Christ, the way he moved to create the piece shows such a strong passionate drive Garibaldi has in wanting to portray a deeper intimacy picture of Christ. The canvases which represent the series of colors, the use of musical influence really a dds to his exceptionality style and details with each stroke. DAVID GARIBALDI David Garibaldi probably is not the most widely known artist of our time. He is still fairly young, but I fell in love with his art. There are many famous living artists today that I could have talked about, but Garibaldi really captured my attention. So, it would not surprise me if many people did not know who David Garibaldi is or know of is his artwork.To be honest, I did not know who he was either had he never appeared on America’s Got Talent in this 2012 past season. He has this mixture to his style of work which includes visual and performing art. There is this uniqueness to how he creates his work pieces, and I found it astonishing at how fast he can get a single art piece done and still be able to draw a person in instantly. Garibaldi Paintings Some people like things they can relate to, possibly understand just to keep them interested, and I thought that some of his art expresses that.In the first page of this paper, some of the images that are displayed are all from David Garibaldi. If you have not noticed, most of the pieces I have chosen to display on the cover page ties people in with music and dance. In my own opinion, I think Garibaldi expresses in most of his art pieces a sense of equality and unity among different people in gender and race. Though he does paint different portraits, he focuses on drawing people that tie in with music, for example, musicians. He has paintings of women enjoying and creating music, which to me, tells me that women should not be afraid to express themselves.Most women in today’s generation have trouble with self-esteem, so to me the paintings he has displaying women with the hair hiding the faces or, the image of a woman looking away gives the viewer a chance to let themselves think as if t hey were the image painted. If that were the case then that kind of style could encourage the viewer to step out of their shell. The image in the beginning of this paper the one that shows a group of people at a disco rink shows release from stress. The different styles, clothing, facial expressions show that people should go out, have fun and to just be yourself in public.Portrait of Christ He created a piece called Portrait of Christ, displaying Christ in what looked like his final moments before his crucifixion. I witnessed how created this piece on YouTube, and I just couldn’t believe how he painted this portrait. He created this piece extremely fast, and not to mention he painted the portrait in way that no one could make out at first until he flipped the canvas around to reveal the competition of his painting. The colors embellished in this painting gave off a series of emotions. The purple, blue, white, and green around Christ’s face and neckline resembled abuse .It told me the story of what he had to go through in order to fulfill God’s will in sacrificing himself for mankind. The black around the eye area, frown, and the tilt of the head of Christ shows sadness, or perhaps reciting a prayer since the black covering the area where the eyes would be give an appearance that his eyes are closed. Painted on top of Christ’s head was the crown of thorns with dashes of red to symbolize the blood, sweat and tears he shed for humanity. The image of the crown in the portrait displays a selfless act, one in which Christ had no qualms in wearing since he knew it was for the benefit of others.This portrait is a magnificent piece of art, because I honestly think that by the position Garibaldi painted Christ, the way he moved to create the piece shows such a strong passionate drive Garibaldi has in wanting to portray a deeper intimacy picture of Christ. The canvases which represent the series of colors, the use of musical influence really a dds to his exceptionality style and details with each stroke. Garibaldi paints in front of his audiences enthusiastically because he wants to get across his messages on the canvases to the audience.
